Come together and make something bigger than just the turn of rhythm, harmony and words. Singing can change the world. We sing positive-vibe tunes, acapella and accompanied, sacred and not-so-sacred, some old, some current and of-the-moment.

We find that singing together counters isolation, hopelessness and powerlessness in our world.

All levels of experience – as long as you breathe, even occasionally, you are welcome!

We offer warm, communal and fun-loving times. Families welcome.

Usually 3 terms per year to sign up for, between 8 and 12 weeks long. About $160 for 12 weeks, some subsidy available.

This is on a volunteer basis only, and no one will be pressured to perform. Members are encouraged to bring along visiting relatives and friends to share in the magic we create together. The mood is comfortable, supportive, non-judgemental and fun! Our fee structure includes a sliding scale discount and various levels of scholarship for those who need them to ensure that no one is ever turned away for lack of money. Fees pro-rated for late starters. Sign up any time. All voices are welcome to share in the joy and enchantment of creating beautiful harmony together.

Blue Heron Singers

pwrobertson@shaw.ca | 250-479-4271

We are the community choir of the Cordova Bay 55+ Association. Everyone is welcome in our space in an Elementary School on Thursday afternoons, as together we explore, discover and create a wide variety of music. For some of us, choirs have been part of our lives for a long time, while for others it is a completely new experience. We learn from and with each another in a welcoming, supportive and open-hearted atmosphere. With song and laughter, we celebrate the many joys of being together, listening to one another, and singing in harmony.

Although we do not ‘perform,’ several times during the year we share some of our eclectic repertoire with audiences in the community.

EveryBodySings!

directed by Shirley Whitelaw and Cyndi Doell

https://www.facebook.com/EveryBodySingsCommunitySinging/

Our mission is to increase joy and harmony in our community by creating the opportunity for everyone to sing regardless of ability.

We believe that singing is our natural human birthright. Humans were meant to sing, and we founded EveryBodySings! singing circles in 2001 to provide a place for anyone to join an energetic, enthusiastic group of ordinary people who sing for the pure joy of singing. We truly believe that everyone can sing, given the right encouragement and atmosphere for vocal development. We both come from singing families where singing was a natural, accepted and joyful form of expression. We love to encourage and inspire others to discover and/or reclaim their voice, to express their own creativity, and to experience the transformational power of singing.

We have taken and offered singing workshops with Brian Tate, Tony Backhouse, Siobhan Robinsong, Denis Donnelly, Eric Dozier, Edwin Coppard and others.

We have two EveryBodySings! groups, one in Lantzville on Tuesday evenings 7–9pm and one in downtown Nanaimo, Thursday mornings, from 10am–noon.

Humble Harmony Nanaimo community song circle

in Nanaimo, BC, Canada
directed by Sylvia Humble CCLT 2023
sylvia@sylviahumble.ca | 250-713-2663
https://www.sylviahumble.ca/humble-harmony

Humble Harmony song circle is a non-performing, experiential community group, focussed on the joy and connection of singing in harmony, imperfectly. Sylvia founded the group in 2021 under the name “Sing Again community choir”, and they sang outdoors year-round during the pandemic, under a picnic shelter with a propane fire, bundled up against the cold and rain. Since then, Humble Harmony has grown to sixty plus singers attending one of three weekly groups in Nanaimo and Parksville (now indoors), with the option to drop in or become a member. Repertoire includes a mix of uplifting, inspiring, and healing songs, pop, folk, world music, and sea shanties. Songs are taught by ear without sheet music; some in 3- or 4-part harmony, and some where harmonies are created organically in the moment, with room for creativity, movement and play.

Singers are also invited to join community singing workshops and events hosted by Sylvia, with visiting artists such as Sarina Partridge and Coco Love Alcorn. All voices belong; no experience needed!
